Starting the day huddled in the beach cafe with a bacon roll for much needed energy, we headed out to the beach once the tide had lowered to an acceptable level. The winds coming over from one of the storms in America had blown rubbish of all description onto a usually, relatively clean beach.
Tyres and lobster pots were hauled back to the parking area for recycling. Interestingly, areas of the beach did look rather clean. However, on further investigation, we found that smaller plastic particles were everywhere. Pen lids, straws, strands of plastic string to name a few culprits.
The team from Racking solutions were in full force on the beach, along with members of the public who had kindly joined us. How can you organise a beach clean, I hear you ask?
Initially, establish where you would like to host the beach clean and check if other beach cleans are happening on the beach so that you ensure there are no clashes. We made contact with Surfers Against Sewerage, they listed the beach clean and gave us the guidance we needed - Risk Assessments and council letters, which you will need to fill in and send to your local council. Following the formalities, we launched an event on Facebook and promoted through our Business Page and Instagram account too. We had over 30 attend, some travelling over 50 miles to help the cause, we had a great few hours on the beach and were really pleased at how we could help in even the smallest of ways. Needless to say, this will undoubtedly become an annual event for us, at least!
As part of our product range, we stock recycled plastic storage boxes and will be giving £1 from every sale to Surfers Against Sewerage.
Please do let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to publish our story. I've attached some photographs from the day.
