How to Organise Your Garage Workbench

A garage workbench is a hub for fixing, building and tinkering. But a messy workbench can turn simple jobs into headaches. With that in mind, we’re giving you the tips needed to set up a workbench that makes your projects easier and more fun.

Where to put your garage workbench

The right spot for your workbench is an important aspect of garage organisation. Consider factors like light. Natural light is best, so try to put your bench near a window. If that's not possible, make sure you've got good overhead lighting.

Space also plays a role. You need room to move, so try leaving at least three feet of space around all sides of your bench. And when it comes to power, make sure you've got easy access to electrical outlets for your power tools.

Another factor is wall space—look for a spot with plenty of wall space above or next to the bench. You'll need to hang tools and shelves. The temperature also needs to be right. Stay away from areas that get too hot or cold. Extreme temperatures can mess with your materials and make working uncomfortable.

How to organise your garage workbench

Start by clearing everything off your bench. If you're setting up a new one, make sure the area is clean and ready. Then follow these steps:

Sort your tools

Group similar items together. Put all your hand tools in one pile, power tools in another, and so on. This makes it easier to find what you need quickly. Consider using tool organisers or storage boxes to keep each category tidy and separate.

Think about how often you use things

Keep the tools you use all the time within easy reach. Store the stuff you don't use much further away. Place daily-use items at eye level or on your workbench surface for quick access.

Use a pegboard

Put a pegboard up above your bench. It's great for hanging tools you use a lot. Pegboards offer flexible storage and make it easy to see all your tools at a glance. Use different hook sizes to accommodate various tool shapes and weights.

Add some shelves

Install garage shelving above or next to your bench for things you don't use as often. Adjustable shelving systems offer flexibility as your needs change. Use sturdy brackets to support heavier items and consider adding a lip to prevent tools from falling off.

Try tote boxes

Tote boxes are great for sorting out project-specific tools and materials. Label them clearly so you know what's inside. Stack them efficiently when not in use. Choose sturdy, transparent boxes to easily see contents and protect tools from dust.

Set up a charging station

Make a spot to charge your cordless tool batteries. Install a power strip or multiple outlets nearby, and consider using a wall-mounted organiser with slots for each battery and charger. Doing so will keep your batteries ready for use and prevent cord clutter on your workbench surface.

Put up a magnetic strip

Putting up a magnetic strip works well for metal tools and keeps them easy to grab. Install it at eye level for quick access, then choose a strong magnet that can hold heavier tools securely. Use multiple strips for different tool sizes or types, as it saves space and keeps tools visible.

Use jars or cups

Small containers can hold things like pencils, markers and small hardware. Repurpose mason jars or coffee cans for cost-effective storage before screwing jar lids to the underside of a shelf for hanging storage that doesn't take up bench space - label containers clearly for easy identification.

Everyone works differently, so adjust your setup as you go until you find what works best for you.

How to keep your garage workbench clean and tidy

Keeping your workbench clean is just as important as organising it. A good way to achieve this is by cleaning daily. At the end of each work session, put your tools back where they belong.

Wipe down surfaces with a vacuum or brush to get rid of sawdust and debris. Then wipe the surface with a damp cloth.

Another way to keep the garage workbench tidy is with a deep clean monthly. Once a month, take everything off your bench and shelves. Give everything a good clean and think about whether your organisation system is still working for you.

Dust can easily make your workbench seem dirty, and garages love accumulating lots of dust. If you do a lot of woodworking, think about adding dust collection to your setup.

Other garage storage solution options

A well-organised workbench is great, but there are other ways to make the most of your garage space:

  • Overhead storage: Install racks from the ceiling to store stuff you don't use often.
  • Wall-mounted cabinets: These keep things dust-free and out of sight.
  • Magnetic tool holders: These work well for metal tools and can be put up anywhere.
  • Rolling carts: Use these for projects or to move heavy stuff around.
  • Corner garage shelves: Make use of corner space that often goes to waste with corner garage shelving.
  • Door organisers: Over-the-door organisers can hold cleaning supplies or small tools.

The goal is to use your vertical space well and keep the floor clear for parking and moving around.

Creating an organised garage workbench

Putting your garage workbench in the right spot, organising it well and keeping it clean means, you'll create a space that makes your work easier and more enjoyable. Don't be afraid to change things up as you go along. The perfect setup is one that works for you and the projects you love to do.
